Leaders Real Madrid are currently eight points clear after a 2-1 win at home to Espanyol. Zaragoza came from behind to beat Atlético 2-1 and lift themselves out of the danger zone.

In tennis, Andy Roddick won the Dubai Championships after a 6-7 (8-10), 6-4, 6-2 win over unseeded Spaniard Feliciano Lopez. Roddick, who has just parted company with his coach, Jimmy Connors, went through the entire tournament without losing his serve or even facing a break-point. It was his second tournament victory of the year.

At the World Indoor Championships in Valencia, Juan Carlos Higuero finished second and Arturo Casado third in the 1500 metres. The winner was the hot favourite, Daniel Kipchirchir Komen of Kenya.

Briton Christopher Tomlinson took silver in the long jump with his opening leap of 8.06m, just 2cm behind the winner, Godfrey Mocoena of South Africa.

In MotoGP, Spain’s Jorge Lorenzo starts on pole for today’s race in Qatar. The 20 year old Spaniard, a newcomer, set a new MotoGP lap record of one minute 53.927 seconds to finish 0.255sec ahead of Britain’s James Toseland, also a MotoGP debutant. The race actually takes place tonight and is the first night-time race.
