THE BRIDGE FROM MARO TO THE NERJA CAVES

Earlier this month the mayor of Nerja, José Alberto Armijo, put a temporary stop to the construction of a bridge across the A-7 highway which was to connect the village of Maro to the Nerja Caves, citing the lack of the necessary permission from the Department of Culture as the construction was taking place on protected land.

The Caves Foundation and the Ministry of Public Works argued that no license was necessary as the construction was part of the original highway project and that this was another case of the municipal authorities deliberately and unnecessarily delaying important projects.

However, at a press conference, the mayor of Nerja has stated that he has now received a letter from the provincial Department of Culture of the Junta de Andalucía stating clearly that the construction of the footbridge is taking place on protected land in Maro and, as a result, special permission is required for the project. So it looks like the mayor was right on this occasion.
