CAMPAIGNING HALTED AFTER FORMER SOCIALIST COUNCILLOR IS SHOT DEAD

Election campaigning has been suspended following the shooting of a former socialist councillor in the town of Mondragon in the Basque region.

Prime Minister José Luís Rodriguez Zapatero and opposition PP leader Mariano Rajoy agreed to suspend further campaigning after a former socialist councillor, Isaias Carrasco was shot dead outside his home in Mondragon.

The assassination is believed to be the work of ETA, although no-one has yet claimed responsibility for the killing. Isaias Carrasco, aged 42 years, was apparently with his family when the shooting occurred. He was hit by several bullets. He was rushed to hospital but died a few hours later.

There will be no further campaigning ahead of Sunday’s general election.
