Environmentalists have complained to the Ministry of Environment about the work being carried out on the Rio Chillar in Nerja. The works are designed to reintroduce a picturesque river to the area and, since the devastating floods of September 21st 2007, to prevent the possibility of similar flooding in the future.
However, the Gabinete de Estudios de la Naturaleza de la Axarquía-Ecologistas en Acción (Cabinet of the environmental group Ecologists in Action) have condemned the works on the grounds that they do not comply with the Estrategia Nacional de Restauración de Ríos (National Strategy for River Restoration). They say that the project is destroying local, native vegetation and creating a false sense of security as the channel is too narrow.
