Torrox plans to preserve industrial past

Torrox Council has approved a plan to protect and renovate various industrial buildings deemed to be valuable historic heritage.

Historians from the Amigos del Patrimonio de la Axarquía (Friends of the Historical Heritage of the Axarquia) have been assisting by visiting various sites and offering suggestions. Buildings being considered under the plan include the sugar factory Ingenio de San Rafael and the aquaduct. Moves are underway to persuade Larios to cede the buildings to the town.

Some buildings will be renovated and opened to the general public, such as the Ingenio de San Rafael, and others will be preserved for posterity. In the case of the old Ingenio Alto, long since gone, a symbolic monument is planned and this will be placed next to the few remaining remnants.
