There have been 9,000 fires in Spain so far this year destroying 32,812 acres of land, much of it forest.
Last year, there were 3,000 fewer fires but they destroyed almost twice as much land, 64,213 hectares. The area most hit was the north-western peninsular (Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria, País Vasco, León and Zamora), accounting for 60% of the fires.
