Proposed new Health Centre

The Nerja Council is preparing to hand over the papers and proposals relating to the new Health Centre to the Junta de Andalucía since the project is now to be funded entirely by the Ministry of Health.

The mayor of Nerja, José Alberto Armijo, is expected to meet next week with representatives of the Health Department to discuss the various proposals and the plots of land which are available.

In a radio interview, PP spokesperson José Miguel García described an accusation by the Junta de Andalucía that the Council breached the 2003 agreement as ‘grotesque’. He stated that the Council had fulfilled its part of the deal, a 50%-50% financing arrangement, and it was the Junta de Andalucía who rejected the first proposed site for the new Health Centre. The second proposed site was recently rejected by the Consultative Council.

Amongst the options currently being considered are a plot near to the Burriana roundabout, the old covered market site in calle San Miguel in the centre of town and another plot to the south of Nerja.

Meanwhile, the Junta de Andalucía is asking for the return of €1.2 million which was advanced to the Nerja Council for the project. José Miguel García said the money was sitting in an account but a meeting would have to be arranged to agree what expenses have already been incurred by the Council and, therefore, need to be deducted from the original sum.

All in all, the new Health Centre is probably no nearer to becoming a reality than it was in 2003.
