Pregnant driver of overcrowded scooter gets 12 month jail sentence

A judge has sentenced a woman to one year in prison and disqualified her from driving for twelve months after finding her guilty of reckless driving. Heavily pregnant at the time, the 26 year scooter rider had her three other children on the machine as well!

Not only that, the kids also had backpacks!

The incident occurred on May 29th this year and started in calle Obispo Bartolomé Espejo in the Las Flores district of Málaga. Police spotted the woman, heavily pregnant, with one child on the back of the scooter and two up front, one of whom was holding the handlebars. The kids also had backpacks and none was wearing a helmet.

When she saw the police, the woman did not stop but instead decided to make a run for it and in the ensuing chase, almost hit a pedestrian on a crossing and in calle San Juan Bosco, she ran a red light which caused a school bus to brake sharply.

She was eventually apprehended in calle Manuel Giménez Lombardo.

The judge ruled that the woman was not only putting other road users at risk through her high speed antics, but also showed little regard for the safety of her own children.

The prosecution was demanding a 27 month prison sentence. However, as the woman has no previous criminal record, she will not actually go to jail.
