A cayuco with 229 illegal immigrants on board has been towed into the port of Los Cristianos on the island of Tenerife.
The boat was first spotted by an Air Service Rescue (SAR) plane about 55 miles off Gran Canaria and was later intercepted by the Maritime Rescue boat ‘Maria Zambrano’ which towed the craft to port.
All on board were sub-Saharan males. The passengers were generally in good health, although five did need treatment for mild hyperthermia.
