Marbella could lose its ‘verbenas’

Marbella Council is seriously considering cutting out the local ‘verbenas’ or ‘folk festivals’ in the community due to both the current economic climate and the legacy of past debts due to the widespread corruption and mismanagement in the municipality.

There are twelve of these traditional ‘verbenas’ throughout the year, small festivals where the local residents have street parties and enjoy a good old knees-up.

The mayor of Marbella, Ángeles Muñoz, has announced a number of upcoming budget cuts and the Department of Fiestas is seen as a prime target for reducing expenditure by cutting the number of events being held within the municipality.

A final decision on the matter is expected within the next few days.
