Storms reeking havoc

The storms and high winds are causing a lot of damage all along the coastline. Waves up to four metres high and winds gusting at 90 kph have all but destroyed La Caleta beach in Málaga and the Local Police and Fire Brigade have been unable to cope with all the calls for assistance.

Trees, lamposts, awning, billboards, antennas, road signs and numerous other objects have been blown down, cars have been damaged by falling debris and two people have so far been injured.

In Málaga, a 56 year old man had to be admitted to hospital after a brick fell from the roof of a building in calle Guillén de Castro and hit him on the head. In Marbella, a woman suffered a minor injury as the result of a falling roof tile.

The port of Málaga had to be closed yesterday due to the storms and ferry crossings were suspended. Some merchant ships, however, which had been anchored near the entrance to the port, were forced to continue their journey to avoid being shipwrecked.

Beaches up and down the coast have suffered a lot of damage, as they always do during storms, but the Department of Coasts is waiting until the storms subside before making a full and proper analysis of the situation.
