Early footy

Real Madrid came out on top in their local derby against Atlético Madrid, but it was last minute stuff.

Real took the lead with just one minute on the clock, van Nistelrooy the scorer. They could have gone further ahead but couldn’t quite manage it. Then, before the break, van Nistelrooy for Real and Perea for Atlético were given their marching orders.

In the 90th minute, Simao appeared to have salvaged a point for Atlético, but it was not to be. In the final second of injury time, of which there were six minutes, Real were awarded a penalty after Heitinga brought down Drenther inside the area. Higuaín stepped up and drilled the ball into the back of the net to give Real a last gasp victory, moving them up to second in La Liga in the process.

Villarreal are the current leaders after a 0-0 draw with Espanyol. Both sides had their chances but couldn’t convert them into goals, not even when Espanyol were awarded a penalty midway through the second half after Capdevila fouled Tamudo on the edge of the area. Tamudo took the penalty but the keeper managed to save it and the match ended all square.
