First bones uncovered in Calañas mass grave

Volunteers from the Association for the Recovery of Historical Memory (ARMH) working on the site of a mass grave in Calañas, Huelva, have discovered the first bones of the eleven people who are supposed to have been buried in the area.

The process to begin the exhumation process the bodies was started four years ago by one of the relatives of one of the victims.

The eleven people thought to be buried in the pit were executed at the gates of the Calañas cemetery on November 13th 1937. Several relatives of the victims have already visited the site.

At least two of those visiting the site have always known of the existence of the grave, having been informed by the gravedigger shortly after the executions took place.
