ETA military chief detained in France

The suspected head of ETA’s military operations has been arrested in the Pyrenean town of Cauternets in southern France.

Mikel Garikoitz Aspiazu Rubina, alias ‘Txeroki’, is suspected of the murder of two Spanish Guardia Civil officers in the French town of Capbreton in 2007 and is also thought to have been involved in the assassination of magistrate José María Lidón in November 2001.

Arrested with ‘Txeroki’ was a woman, thought to be Leire López Zurutuza, a former member of the ‘Zapa comando’ who is wanted for questioning in connection with a number of bombings.

Both were armed when they were detained by the French authorities.
