Fire destroys chapel at Nerja cemetery

A fire on Christmas Eve has completely destroyed the interior of the small chapel of rest ‘Ánimas Benditas’ at the Nerja cemetery in calle San Miguel.

At around 21:00, local residents noticed a thick column of smoke rising from the chapel and notified the authorities. It took the Fire Brigade about forty minutes to smother the flames.

The blaze was apparently caused by one of the many candles that are traditionally kept burning in the chapel. The interior was completely charred and a statue of the Virgen del Carmen, dating from the 1940’s, was destroyed.
