Bad weather claims four lives

The bad weather has so far claimed the lives of four people as storms lashed the coastal areas.

Waves up to nine metres high have been lashing the coastal areas, sinking boats and causing severe flooding in some areas, and five mountain passes are closed due to heavy snows. Snow chains are required in a further thirty-five passes.

In Barcelona, a security guard died after being struck by a wave and dragged out to sea.

In Puerto de Gandía, Valencia, a couple were walking by the breakwater when they were hit by a huge wave and dragged out to sea. The woman was rescued alive but the man, a 53 year old, drowned.

In Prat de Llobregat, one of two occupants of a car died after the vehicle fell into the water and was swept away.

The fourth victim was a diver, caught by a huge swell in the Barcelona district of  Sant Andeu de Llaveneres.

In Tossa de Mar, waves washed over the promenade wall and completely flooded nearby houses and restaurants.
