CPI at lowest for ten years

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) closed 2008 at 1.4%, the lowest figure for ten years. This is based on such items as transport, food, non-alcoholic beverages and housing.

The ‘shopping basket’ index was helped on its downward slide by falling oil prices and, to a lesser extent, food prices.

The underlying inflation rate, which excludes fuel and food prices, closed at 2.4%.
