Get ’em down

Large, unsightly billboards are part and parcel of the scenery along the side of roads in Marbella, but maybe not for much longer.

The Council is taking action to try and eliminate some of the nearly 250 illegal billboards in the municipality.

Ninety businesses have already been told to remove the offending articles or face fines of €3,000 plus the costs incurred in taking down the signs. Many of the signs are unlicensed, too close to the roads or have been put up on public land.

In one instance, former mayor Marisol Yagüe, now in disgrace, issued licences to one particular company to erect a number of signs. The current Council annulled the licences but the company appealed the decision. However, the Council action was subsequently upheld, so down they must come.
