First jail term for illegal downloading

For the first time in Spain, a court has sentenced an individual to a prison term for an offence relating to the illegal downloading of copyrighted material.

The Criminal Court in Logroño has sentenced a 22 year old youth to six months in prison and fined him €4,900 for an offence against intellectual property for the purpose of profit.

The youth offered links to illegal copies of files via his website where, with one click, you could download the file without the consent of the owner. It was judged that the youth obtained financial benefit from the service through advertisements on the website.
