Municipal phones cut off in Estepona

The municipality of Estepona is in a bit of a financial mess at the moment, to say the least, and now Telefonica has cut off the phones to several departments due to the non-payment of bills.

Telefonica began on January 10th to cut the phone lines of municipal offices if the bills were unpaid and are continuing that policy. According to the Councilor for Finance, Antonio Sánchez, the outstanding bills will be paid in the next few days and the telephone lines can then be reconnected.

The Council is also having great difficulty meeting the monthly municipal wage bill of €3,675,000, which represents 87% of the municipal budget! The Council receives funding from the Junta de Andalucía but is constantly failing to generate enough income to pay the wages.

Once again, the Council is hoping to sort out the outstanding wages bill as soon as more funds arrive from the Junta de Andalucía.
