Police break up counterfeiting network

An investigation by the National Police in cooperation with the Bulgarian police has resulted in the dismantling of a large currency counterfeiting operation.

The investigation, codenamed ‘Serena’ in Spain, began in 2007 and was coordinated by Europol and Eurojust. Seventeen people have so far been detained and three counterfeiting workshops have been discovered in the Bulgarian town of Plovdiv.

During raids on 24 premises, police seized half a million forged €100, €200 and €500 banknotes. Notes produced in Bulgaria were being distributed throughout the European Union.
