Three climbers seriously injured in the Sierra Nevadas

Three climbers are in a serious condition in hospital after falling as they walked through the Sierra Nevadas in Granada.

The three climbers, who were not experienced, were in an area known as ‘Los Tajos de Dios’ within the perimeter of the ski resort although not on the pistes.

One of the climbers, a 30 year old woman, was making her way using crampons when she slipped. Her companions, two brothers, aged 54 years and 50 years, tried to stop her falling but were themselves dragged about 100 metres down the slope.

The climbers were rescued by staff from Cetursa, the ski resort operators, and evacuated to the Pradellano Health Centre before being transferred to hospitals in Granada. All three were unconscious at the time of transfer to hospital, one having to be taken by helicopter.

Two of the climbers are said to be in a serious condition and one is critical.
