Number of foreigners registered in Spain is on the increase

More than 5.6 million foreigners were registered on the padrón (census) in Spain during 2009, representing an increase of 400,000 on the figure for 2008.

The 2009 figure of 5.6 million is five times the number recorded a decade ago in 2000 when there were 923,000 foreigners registered in the various autonomous regions.

Around 2.5 million of these foreigners are from the EU, 217,000 from non-EU countries, 900,000 from Africa and 2 million from the Americas, mostly Latin America.

The countries with the largest presence in Spain are Morocco, Rumania and Ecuador.

The number of foreigners has increased in all autonomous regions, Andalucia registering 52,000 more foreigners in 2009. Madrid up by 58,000 and Valencia up by 42,000.
