Risk of crane collapse in Macarena necessitates evacuation of residents

One hundred people in seven apartment blocks have had to be evacuated from their homes in Macarena, Sevilla, due to the risk of collapse of a huge crane working in the area.

During yesterday afternoon, several crack appeared in buildings in calle Taf and four blocks of flats were evacuated. Further cracks appeared in buildings in calle Per and calle Talgo and by early this morning, seven blocks had been evacuated.

The crane has been working in neighbouring calle Albucasis where excavation works are being carried out on a garage under construction at the University of Sevilla. In addition, the rains of recent months have also acted to destabilise the crane.

The crane has been weighted down to prevent its collapse until it can be removed from the site.
