Torrox postpones water rates increase

Torrox Council has decided to postpone the proposed increase in water rates, due to take effect on July 1st, until after it has carried out a public information campaign to explain exactly why the increase is necessary.

The proposed increase will mean that the average quarterly water bill will rise by about 3.2%.

The Council has no choice but to charge a fixed fee of €2 per square metre plus CPI (Consumer Price Index) updates covering the years 2005 to 2010. This is because the Council is in debt to the water company Aqualia following the decision in 2007 by the Association of Municipalities of the Axarquia (Mancomunidad) to raise the cost per square metre of water supplied to municipalities in the region.
