Clampdown on illegal tobacco sales in Estepona

Local Police in Estepona have been clamping down on the illegal sale of tobacco in kiosks and other establishments in the area, seizing 300 packs of cigarettes in the past month.

Officers in plan clothes have been monitoring various establishments, including kiosks and an Oriental bazaar, where tobacco has been sold illegally and, in many cases, to minors.

At one kiosk, police noted that one person at a kiosk was regualarly selling single cigarettes to minors. At another kiosk, 23 packs of cigarettes were confiscated.

The recent increases in the price of tobacco has led to more cigarettes being bought in Gibraltar and then resold illegally in Spain. The saving to the smoker is around one euro per packet.

This practice also sees the tobacconists suffering a fall in revenue, something they do not appreciate and they are quite happy to denounce establishments engaged in the illegal sale of tobacco.
