Vélez-Málaga tram system continues in decline

The Vélez-Málaga tram system finished the year with a total of 562,000 passengers, the lowest since the introduction of the tram in 2006 and a bit below the 1,238,000 passengers required to make the system economically viable.

The number of tram passengers has decreased steadily from the start and the Council is running up a huge debt to the tram concessionaire, Travelsa. Just for 2011, the Council has incurred a debt of €1,057,229.
