Over one million euros found hidden in car arriving from the Canary Islands

Guardia Civil and Customs officers in Cádiz have seized €1,002,330 hidden in the false bottom of a Mercedes arriving from the Canary Islands.

Officers selected a Mercedes A170 CDI for inspection and discovered a flase compartment under the driver’s seat in which the money was hidden. The amount is well over the limit allowed to be brought into the country without documentation.

As well as an investigation into whether the money was being brought into the country as a means of money laundering, the owner of the vehicle, a 34 year old resident of Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, will have to prove the lawful origin of the money.

The owner has a prior record relating to drug trafficking. The money and the car have been impounded by the police until the investigation is complete.
