The Guardia Civil have arrested one man and seized 670 packets of cigarettes worth €2,870 in the town of Benarrabá in the Serrania de Ronda.
The detainee, a 42 year old Spanish national from La Linea de la Concepción, was arrested on suspicion of violating the law on smuggling. The amount of tobacco was below the limit for a criminal charge of smuggling to be brought.
The cigarettes were hidden under the back seat of the detainee’s vehicle. Fines for such infringements can be up to three times the value of the tobacco due to the evasion of paying customs duty.
