Not looking good for the Fire Station

The prospects for the proposed Nerja Fire Station look rather bleak at the moment, a blow for the residents of the area and the municipal coffers.

The project has not been included in the Master Plan for the Prevention and Extinction of Fires in Andalucia, a prerequisite if the project was to go ahead. This is despite an agreement signed by the Regional and Provincial governments some eight months ago.

In addition, the Junta de Andalucia has not confirmed financing for such a project, even though the Provincial Council maintains there is sufficient money, some €1.8 million, still available in the budget.

The Council considers the current temporary Fire Station near the Burriana roundabout to be inadequate in respect of facilities, equipment and staff.

The Mayor of Nerja, having drawn a blank with the Ministry of Interior, Emergencies and Civil Defence, is now trying to set up a meeting with the Ministry of Justice to pursue the matter further.
