Thefts of copper wire leave residents in the dark

Numerous residential areas in Jerez de la Frontera have been without public lighting since Christmas as a result of thefts of copper wire, with the Council unable to keep replacing the stolen material due to a lack of funds.

As many as fifty streets are without lighting, residents having to use torches. A special protocol has been set up with the National Police, but so far no arrests have been made.

In other areas of Cádiz, such as Vejer, Chiclana, San Fernando and La Barca de La Florida, similar thefts have been taking place and 13 people have been arrested.
