The A Virxe de Barca monastery in Muxía, Galicia, was almost completely destroyed by fire on Christmas Day, apparently after the spread of a fire caused by a lightning strike on a nearby electrical transformer.
The fire was reported at 08:30 on Christmas morning and firefighters and volunteers battled to save the monastery, a pilgrimage site on the Costa da Morte. Unfortunately, their efforts were to no avail and the monastery was, according to the mayor of Muxia, ‘ruined’.
