A patient died early on Sunday morning at the Hospital Virgen del Camino in Sanlúcar de Barrameda, apparently lighting a cigarette which caused his internal medication to catch fire.
The incident occurred at 06:30 and the smoke and fire necessitated the rapid evacuation of eleven other patients.
The fire was extinguished and the hospital has now returned to normal.
