Miniature train between La Viñuela and Zafarraya

The railway between Málaga and Ventas de Zaffaraya in Granada ceased to operate in 1959 but a new miniature replica steam train is now operating as a Tourist Train on part of the route, namely between La Viñuela and Zafarraya.

The miniature steam train, powered by a diesel engine, is an exact replica of the locomotives used by the Málaga Suburban Railway Company between 1922 and December 10th 1958. It has three carriages and can accommodate thirty passengers.

This Tourist Train project required financing of €127,000, with €72,000 being provided by the Ministry of Trade and Tourism.

The track is just ten inches wide and the locomotive has a top speed of 15 kph, although in practice it will probably only generally manage about half of that. Málaga Council is in talks with the municipalities of Alcaucín and Periana regarding future extensions to the line.
