Antonio Mercero, director of Verano Azul dies

Following a long battle with Alzheimer's film and screenwriter Antonio Mercero has died in Madrid aged 82.

Loved by the town of Nerja after putting the municipality on the map following the release of hit television show ‘Verano Azul’ in 1981,  Mercero has been recognized with numerous awards, among them, in 1973 he got the Emmy for ‘La Cabina’ and in 2010 he received the Goya of honour from the Film Academy for his professional career.

 

Retiring from public life in 2006 due to his illness the talented director remained much loved by the townsfolk of Nerja who placed a plaque and bust in his honour Paseo Marítimo de Burriana.

The town council of Nerja wish to express their condolences to family and friends for the loss of the beloved Antonio Mercero.
