There was a small demonstration this evening underneath the arches on the Balcón de Europa, the government austerity measures being the subject of the protest.
Labour reforms approved
The Spanish parliament has ratified labour reforms designed to tackle the country’s economic woes and bring down the high unemployment, currently standing at 20% of the working population.
Pizarra set to approve austerity measures
At its next plenary session, Pizarra Council is expected to approve a reduction in salary of 7% for the Mayor, a 5% reduction for Councillors and a 5% in attendance allowances for meetings and commissions.

José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero has announced a package of measures aimed at reducing the public deficit, including a reduction in salaries of public sector staff, the abolition of the ‘baby cheque’ and the freezing of pensions.
