A forest fire which began on Wednesday evening in the Fernán Pérez area of Níjar, Almeria, is now under control after firefighters worked through the night to extinguish the blaze.

Canoeist drowns off Almería coast
A 38 year old man drowned after his canoe overturned at Playazo de Rodalquilar in Níjar, Almería. His companion in the canoe, which was only a few metres from the shore, managed to swim to safety. Paramedics tried to resuscitate the man but to no avail.
