Vélez-Málaga Council is to spend €130,000 to restore the altarpiece in the church of Santa Maria la Mayor.
The provincial Department of Culture has given permission for the renovation of the altarpiece, the works to include not only cleaning and repair work but also a number of preventative treatments against oxidation and insect pests.
The repairs are to be carried out without removing the altarpiece as it is thought that dismantling it could cause damage. The altarpiece dates from 1565, although there are indications that it wasn’t finally completed until the beginning of the 17th century.
