Fire forces evacuation of five-storey block in Nerja

A five-storey apartment block in calle Las Flores, Nerja, had to be evacuated yesterday after a fire in the kitchen of a third floor flat.

At 15:00 yesterday, fire broke out in the kitchen of a third floor flat in edificio Los Lirios, calle Las Flores, causing some 40 residents to be evacuated from their homes as a precautionary measure.

A resident of the block, upon hearing the shouts of ‘fire’, instinctively rushed to see what was happening and, after discovering the source of the fire, began pouring buckets of water on the flames. He was later joined by three other residents who helped until the Fire Brigade arrived and extinguished the blaze.

The fire is thought to have started through an ‘oversight’ by the occupants of the apartment, two Moroccans, who had left a pan of oil on the cooker. The kitchen floor was totally destroyed in the fire and two of the impromptu firefighters needed treatment for smoke inhalation.

The fire was extinguished by 15:30 and the residents were allowed to return to their homes.
