23 sub-Saharan visitors rescued

A total of 23 sub-Saharan visitors have been rescued after their pneumatic boat was spotted about 53 miles off Motril.

The dinghy was first spotted by a fishing vessel and then intercepted by the Maritime Rescue Service. The occupants, who included a pregnant woman, were all in the water after their boat overturned and a helicopter was called in to check the area to make sure that everyone was accounted for.

The visitors were taken to Motril where the National Police, Guardia Civil and Red Cross were on hand to greet them. Some of the visitors showed signs of hyperthermia but were said to be generally ‘healthy’. The pregnant woman was transferred to Santa Ana hospital for a routine medical examination.
