A 39 year old man died on Sunday morning in a fire at his home in Málaga after apparently falling asleep on the sofa with a lighted cigarette.
The fire, at number 1 calle Curadero in the El Molinillo district of Málaga, only affected the sofa and a few nearby objects and this has led to the initial assumption that the cause was a lighted cigarette.
The man’s partner, who had been asleep in a different room, discovered the fire and dragged the unconscious victim from the sofa. Neighbours, alerted by the smoke, came to help and extinguished the fire. The man was taken to Carlos Haya hospital suffering from burns to 80% of his body but medics were unable to do anything to save his life and he died after suffering cardiac arrest.
The woman was treated for smoke inhalation but was later released from hospital.
