The Nerja Caves were discovered on January 12th, 1959, so to mark the start of the 50th anniversary celebrations, the first event will take place on….January 12th.
At 12:00 on Monday January 12th, a ceremony will be held at the plaza leading to the Nerja Caves.
In accordance with a unanimous agreement made on September 26th, 2005, the plaza will be officially named ‘Plaza de los Descubridores de la Cueva de Nerja’ and the names of the five discoverers will appear on a plaque.
The five lads who discovered the caves are: Francisco Navas Montesinos, José Torres Cárdenas, Miguel Muñoz Zorrilla, José Luis Barbero de Miguel and Manuel Muñoz Zorrilla.
