It was a whopper

Green Anacondas are the world’s heaviest snakes, weighing in at around 250 kilos. Reticulated pythons are the world’s longest snakes, measuring up to 10 metres.

Small fry. Scientists in Canada have been analysing the fossilised remains of a prehistoric snake found in north-east Colombia and have come to the conclusion that it was probably 13 metres long and weighed around 1,140 kilos. That’s some snake.

The snake, which lived some 58 to 60 million years ago, is a relative of the modern day boa constrictor. Details about this giant snake, named Titanoboa cerrejonensis by its discoverers, has been published in the journalNature‘.
