Sinking ships

A proposal to resolve the issue of beach erosion in Nerja has been drawn up by the City Council, Buceo Costa Nerja and a group of diving enthusiasts and the intention is to submit this to the Junta de Andalucía for consideration.

The idea is to sink a number of wooden boats and reinforced concrete blocks about 200 metres from the shoreline to create an artificial reef. The Council already has three boats in readiness.

The aims of the reef are to prevent the perpetual erosion of the beach, stop illegal inshore fishing and protect the marine life in the area. The area would then become more attractive for marine tourism.

The initial cost of this project has been estimated at around €400,000.
