Environmentalists express concern

Environmentalists and divers who regularly frequent the waters in the Maro-Cerro Gordo natural area are expressing great concern and even alarm at the destruction of the natural environment.

The Plataforma por las Praderas Marinas de la Axarquía have expressed concern about the continued disappearance of many native species of flora and fauna in the area, particularly the sea grasses.

This destruction, according to the Platform, is due to several factors, although all interlinked. They cite trawling in the area, excessive scuba diving, the discharge of untreated waste and an increase in visitor numbers to the area as causes of the destruction of the unique eco-system of the area.

In addition, they believe that the area is still suffering from the aftermath of the floods two years ago as very little, if any, remedial measures have been carried out.

The Platform has, on several occasions, proposed the cleaning and restocking of the area but has been turned down each time.
