Odour reduction

In view of the fact that Nerja still does not have a sewage plant, as we are all painfully aware, and obnoxious odours are one of the major complaints of local residents in some areas, the Council has decided to install ozone injectors into several pumping stations to try and alleviate the problem somewhat.

The project, costing €24,000, is being financed under the Fondo Estatal para la Sostenibilidad y el Empleo Local (FEESL), more commonly known as the ‘Plan Zapatero’.

The gas is already used in swimming pools and improves the efficiency of the pumps and helps reduce unwanted odours. Currently, the pumping stations merely pump the untreated effluent out to sea off Burriana and Torrecilla beaches.
