Coín proposes to ban the ‘burka’ in public buildings

The Councillor for Equality in Coín, Inmaculada Agüera, has stressed that the proposal to ban the ‘burka’ and ‘niuab’ in public buildings in the municipality is not a revenue-earning measure.

The PSOE and PA are proposing to ban the wearing of the two Muslim garments in public buildings, schools, health centres and sports facilities although it will be permitted on public thoroughfares.

The reasoning behind the proposed ban is that the garments prevent the integration of Muslim women into society and pose a threat to collective security as the wearer cannot be identified.

There are 1,500 Muslims registered on the local padrón. The Council believes that it has the support of the people of the municipality for this measure which is scheduled to be approved on June 28th.
