Local austerity measures

The Council has announced a new set of austerity measures which will bring the total savings during the current four year legislature to €510,450. This is in addition to the reductions imposed by the Central Government.

Salaries of various functionaries in Nerja have been frozen since 2008 and the new measures include a 6% salary reduction for full-time officials, 5% salary reduction for part-time officials and a 2.7% decrease in allowances for attending meetings of various kinds.

One always wonders why public officials the world over, who are generally more than adequately compensated by means of a salary, are then also paid to ‘turn up’ or to attend meetings forming part of their job description.

Savings in 2008 were €2,131.65, in 2009 it was €146,602.80, in 2010 it will be €251,521.37 and for the first five months of 2011 it will be €110,194.30.

As with the savings as a result of the measures introduced by the Central Government, the Council intends to use these new savings to create temporary local employment and fund social programmes.
