Firemen in Vigo have discovered the bodies of an elderly couple at their home in calle Vilagarcía after neighbours reported them missing.
The couple were in a sixth floor apartment in the Coia district of Vigo and the authorities had to gain access from the apartment above. Upon arrival at the scene, the firemen immediately noticed an odour in the air as they got out of their vehicle and reported that the smell inside the building was almost unbearable.
Inside the apartment, firemen discovered two badly decomposed bodies lying on the floor in an embrace. It is thought that the man died around 15 days ago and that the woman remained nursing his body until she died from starvation some 10 days later.
The couple are thought to have been in their eighties. Cause of death has been certified as natural.
