Testing times

An American woman, named by the press down under as Ashley Kerekes, from Massachusetts, complained about people suddenly sending messages to her Twitter account about cricket.

Kerekes says she knows nothing about cricket but for some reason received scores of tweets about the Ashes contest between Australia and England, finally tweeting that she was ‘not a freaking cricket match’. Her Twitter account is @theashes.

Ms Kerekes stated that she had about 300 followers at the start of the first Ashes Test at the Gabba on Thursday, but by Monday morning this had risen to 6,100. An airline even offered her a free flight to Australia.

Ashley Kerekes, aged 22 years, said her boyfriend had been calling her ‘the ashes’ for a long time, but that neither of them could remember why he had given her this nickname. Maybe he thought she was burnt out!

Since becoming a bit of a celebrity, however, her initial anger has subsided and she has now even started to sell T-shirts with the slogan ‘I am not a freaking cricket match’.
